Understand Different Types of Essays

You cannot successfully write an essay if you do not understand the type of essay you intend to write.

Essays are generally grouped as:

• Narrative - Narrative essays tell a story about a subject in a direct and orderly manner. The story given may be fictional.
• Descriptive – These focus on the details. For instance, you can write an essay on a trip you took last December. Here, you will have features such as how the wind felt on your skin and what the surroundings looked like.
• Persuasive - Persuasive essays are meant to convince someone to buy into a point of view.
• Expository - It explains a process such as how to make a sandwich or peanut butter.

If you know the kind of essay you want to write, it becomes easier to choose a topic and to choose the structure.

Brainstorming

Before you write an essay, you need to organize your ideas. Brainstorming helps you come up with essay topic and essay ideas. , you sit and think of the best ideas for your essay.

Write down all the ideas that float in your mind and then narrow down to a single idea that is most appropriate. If you are writing an essay for a college application or part of your college tests, you will be given a topic, and all you need to think of are the contents of the essay.

When developing a topic at this stage, you can use clustering or mind mapping to come up with ideas. Here, you write down the topic at the center of a page and then use bubbles or branches to come up with related topics and ideas. This is an excellent way of identifying connections between different facets of a topic.

After brainstorming, choose the most appropriate topic. If, for instance, you are to write a one-page essay, choosing a topic such as 'The History of English' will not be appropriate. Instead, you could write about a specific aspect of English such as 'The Relation between English and Greek.'

Research

Brainstorming is followed by research. Research helps you find the correct information on your topic of choice. You can do your research in the library, or on the internet. You can also interview people/experts about the topic. Your research needs to be organized to make it easy to refer and cite.

Develop a Thesis

Your thesis is the reason why you are writing an essay. It is one sentence that describes the whole essay. For instance, "Man descended from monkeys." This thesis will be used as the base of your essay, and all the points in your essay need to be linked to the thesis. You will use the thesis in the first paragraph of your essay and carry it through the whole essay.

The thesis needs to be broad so that you have enough information to fill your essay but not full to the extent that you are not thorough.

Essay Outline

Next, you need to outline your essay with all the contents you are going to write. This means coming up with the skeleton of what you will write, before you start writing, to ensure that your essay flows in a logical and organized manner.

For instance, you can have a five-paragraph essay with:

• Introduction
• Body idea 1
• Body idea 2
• Body idea 3
• Conclusion

In each of the five paragraphs outline the specific ideas to include. While it may seem formulaic, outlining your essay makes it easier for you when you are writing. You should not have too many ideas on one paragraph, and you should ensure that the transition from one paragraph to the next is smooth.

Writing and Editing
